What is Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key that certifies the identity of the holder, issued by a Certifying Authority (CA). It typically contains your identity (name, email, country, APNIC account name and your public key). Digital Certificates use Public Key Infrastructure meaning data that has been digitally signed or encrypted by a private key can only be decrypted by its corresponding public key. A digital certificate is an electronic “credit card” that establishes your credentials when doing business or other transactions on the Web.
What is an eToken?
USB e-Token can be password protected so that Digital Signature is never lost when computer is formatted or Internet Explorer changed. A virus cannot affect USB Token, and the digital certificate stored would always be secure. eToken is a special purpose token that is made only for the storage of a Digital Certificate. Currently the major eTokens available in the market includes ePass 2003 Auto, WD Proxkey, m-Token, Alladin and Safenet. A Digital Signature can only be stored on an eToken and recently the eToken CSP version was recently updated by the CCA to CSP 2.0 enhancing the security of the token further. An eToken is in shape of a pen drive and people normally confuse it with a normal pen drive that can be used to storage media however it is not the case. An eToken for DSC is a highly secured device that can be used just for storing Public and Private key of a Digital Signature Certificate.
What is Encryption and Difference between Encryption and Signing
Message encryption provides confidentiality. Allows users to encrypt document with the public key which can be decrypted only with the corresponding private key. To put it in simple terms when encrypting, you use their public key to write message and recipient uses their private key to read it. One of the most secure way protecting for confidential documents.
Message signing binds the identity of the message source to this message. It ensures data integrity, message authentication, and non-repudiation altogether. When signing, you use your private key to write message’s signature, and they use your public key to check if it’s really yours.
Practically Digital Signature Applicants are compulsorily required to get an Encryption certificate along if they are using it at specific places where an Encryption certificate has been made compulsory by the Authority on which the DSC is being used.
Applications of DSC
India is moving towards digital and in the new Digital Era, Digital Signature has become a daily need of the citizens of the country to carry on their day to day tasks. Whether it be filing a return on Income Tax or GST or filing compliances for a company you own, you need a DSC. Even a tender can not be applied without a Digital Signature in the current generation. Government is trying to make the country paperless everyday by making Digital Signature implement at various new sites and compliances daily. Recently all Gram Panchayats had to compulsorily get a DSC issued for them as their grants won’t be issued now without use of a Digital Signature.
A Digital Signature of a person is only made after making sure the person is applying himself as currently the process of procuring a Digital Signature is very stringent. A Life certificate of pensioners can even be issued through a Digital Signature of the person who is entitled for the pension. A Digital Signature certificate issued in India currently can be used for carrying so many tasks that one may can not even think of.
The government is even preparing since long to replace paper cheques with Digital Cheques through Digital Signature however infrastructure required for it is not ready yet and so it has been delayed.
Some of the major uses of a Digital Signature are:-
